Girls Quadruple Scull crowned national champions with 6.5-second lead

Two crews of six rowers qualified to attend the Scholastic Rowing National Championships this weekend in Saratoga Springs, NY.  While facing the top competition from across the country both boats raced their way to the Grand Finals.

The Boys Double Sculls pulled in an exciting sprint placing just
6 6/100s of a second above the Conestoga crew that beat them two weeks ago in Philadelphia. This earned them 5th place. The Girls Quadruple Scull took control of the competition early on by qualifying with a time that was more than 10 seconds faster than the next crew. The Grand Finals proved to be more competitive but the Friends Crew was able to maintain a commanding 6.5-second lead to earn their title as 2010 National Champions!

This is Friends Academy's 6th National Championship in its 21 years of rowing. This success marks the first time FA girls have won a national championship in a team boat, and the first time for FA to win a quad event of any type since 1991.

FA Rower invited
to USRowing Junior National Team
A Friends Academy sophomore rower has received an invitation to the USRowing Junior National Team Selection Camp this summer.
Selection camp is limited to the top 24 female scullers in the country with the purpose to select the top 7 to represent the USA at the Junior World Championships in August in Racice, Czech Republic.

Last year, alumnus Nicole Bielawski '09 received this honor, and ultimately represented the US Team in the single scull at the World Championships in Brieve, France. This is the first time FA Crew has been invited two years in a row.

Boys Varsity Tennis Doubles advances
to state championship
Friends Academy will send one of three doubles representing Nassau County at the NY State HS Tennis Championships on June, 3, 4, and 5 at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.

At the Nassau County Individual Championships held at Oceanside HS on May 15 and 16, the Friends doubles team finished second out of 48 teams and guaranteed them All-state Honors.

Nassau County has been recognized as the top tennis section in the state, so this is a tremendous accomplishment. It is also the highest finish in FA history. Last year, Friends qualified for states by finishing third at the Nassau County Championships and third in the state as an unseeded team.

"I look forward to continuing to build our tennis program and put Friends Academy in the minds of as many people as possible," said coach Brian Baxter. "This doubles team work extremely well together and will represent FA with great honor and class," he added.
