LFicheraMessage from Lydia Fichera '84, Alumni Board Member

Dear Fellow Alumni,

As the newest member on the Friends Academy Alumni Association Board (FAAAB), I am proud to greet you and introduce myself to the Friends Academy alumni community. I attended Friends Academy from 1978 to 1984, middle school through upper school.  Thirty years ago, life seemed so much simpler. Phones were connected by coiled plastic-coated wire to its base, letters were sent through the US Postal Service for 10 cents per envelope, and the resource available to research a topic for a school project was primarily the Encyclopedia Britannica. Today cell phones, e-mail and the Internet are so widely used, it is a wonder we survived without the advanced technology.

Change, it is the one thing in life that is constant. At times, change relates to growth and at other times, crisis.  One of the reasons why I joined the alumni board was to support the Friends Academy alumni through this period of economic uncertainty by assisting in fostering a community of alumni which can provide support and assistance to one another during this time.  The Friends Academy community, along with the rest of the nation, has been confronted with many challenges related to job loss, reduced income due to downsizing, and the loss of retirement savings, which so many of us relied on for our future. However grim these challenges appear, it is through a sense of community that one is able to successfully pull through a crisis. It is through one's community that a crisis can be transformed into an opportunity for growth.

The goal of the FAAAB is to support the alumni body in a manner consistent with the Quaker values which guided our social, emotional and educational growth as Friends Academy students. As a community, we share a history of being educated in one of the best academic institutions in the nation, and as such, we are rich in resources that can provide support to alumni as well as the current student body.  By facilitating and encouraging personal and professional connections within the alumni community, the FAAAB is able to promote and extend the Quaker values we adhered to as FA students to the Alumni body.

As I have gotten to know my colleagues on the Friends Academy Alumni Association Board, I am consistently amazed by their dedication and determination in supporting the current and former students by their efforts in organizing social and academic events. My board colleagues strive to continue to foster and promote the well-being of all the individuals who share a history of being educated at Friends Academy.

In a society faced with complexity and economic challenges, it is reassuring to know there is a community of people who care about the well-being of its members. I am honored to be part of the Friends Academy Alumni Association Board and I look forward to supporting our community in a manner consistent with the high level of quality I experienced as a student at Friends Academy.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

~ Lydia
